MAKING MOVIES WITH DEVOLVER

Hello there,

Today's entry is about a fun tool called Devolver Moviemaker. This tool could be useful in integrating English Language Teaching with Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Devolver is an interesting tool which could be utilised in classroom, especially language classroom because it helps to integrate dialogues with some animated visuals. From the title of the tool, we could guess that it is a movie making tool which has easy and quick steps. Generally, people think movie making is a complicated process, but this website makes movie making easier and simpler and also made suitable for all range of students because it allows the users to express their ideas freely.

this website is suitable for teaching English in classroom because it enable the learners to think creatively and use creative language to communicate. this website allows the users to create their own version of movie.

Below are the easy steps on how to make movie using Devolver:

1) Selecting plot - Learners could choose the intended story line or theme.  there is also suggestion given for each plot, eg: in the picture below, the plot is: Rendez-Vous and it is ideal for Romance/Drama/Comedy. Click Next to proceed to next section after finishing each section.

1) Selecting characters - then, the user could choose their characters from the list and also be creative by having more than one characters or choose the best character from the list for their movie.

2) Create setting - movie requires setting, so users could choose setting or background for the movie from the given list based on the respective theme, story or interest for the movie.

3) Creating dialogue for the character(s) - This is the most interesting part of this movie making. In this section, the user are required to create dialogue for their character based on their plot. Here, the users could express their ideas freely and creatively to make the movie interesting.

4) Background music - Lastly, having background music for the movie is optional, the users could have it we they want to make the video more interesting and fun. There are plenty music to choose from for their respective movie, in order to create a mood.

5) Save the movie -  This tool also allows the users to save their movie and send or publish it wherever they require. In language class, students could send their work to their respective teacher for evaluation.

Here is an example of movie which I made using this website. Hope this could be helpful in terms of showing the preview of how a movie will be at the end after the whole process using The Devolver Moviemaker.

I like Devolver:

  • It is useful for language classroom because it integrates dialogues with animated and colourful images. Word and letters could be boring sometimes and a movie without visual is pointless and dull. Therefore,  using this tool would attract the students attention to participate in learning the language.
  • The easy and simple instructions allows the users to create movie with many parts or scenes in a short time. The teachers could utilise this tool by give movie making as a homework task for students without worrying about the difficulty in movie making.
  • It also helps the users to express their ideas using English and, at the same times, practice real life communication, which is believed to provide a platform for meaningful usage of language.
  • It enables the teachers to monitor students' performance while having fun in movie making like killing two birds with one stone. Teacher's monitoring would help to focus both language forms and function used by students. Thus, this website is really beneficial as a classroom activity or homework for students.

The limitations using Devolver:

  • students or users may use inappropriate language in the dialogue (colloquial language) due to the freedom for speech
  • time consuming
  • requires technology like computers and internet facilities when conducting in classroom (problematic in schools with insufficient facilities)
  • students and teachers ability of using technology differs (burden if either one of them poor in ICT based knowledge)
